Three interesting studies on ADHD

The first of these studies shows a link between ADHD and exposure to organophosphate pesticides (OPP). It measured levels of OPP in the urine of more than 1,000 children. Results showed that the higher the concentration of OPP, the more likely it was for children to have a diagnosis of ADHD. Exposure to organophosphate pesticides is common in the US and it is likely that these chemicals interact with genes to trigger ADHD in some children and not in others (Pediatrics, 2010;125:e1270-e1277).

The second and third studies give us clues as to what we can do to help children with ADHD without resorting to drugs. As researchers in one of the studies put it “the short-term efficacy of stimulant medications is well-established… however, mood becomes unstable at higher doses”. In my experience higher doses of these drugs are inevitable as these medications become progressively less effective over periods of several years.

One study followed a group of children for a full year, something rarely done in medication research. It was a randomized, double-blind multi-center study performed in several European countries. It concluded that the natural amino acid Acetyl-l-carnitine at a dose of 20-50 mg per Kg of body weight per day “represents a safe alternative to the use of stimulant drugs for the treatment of ADHD” (Am J Med Genet A, 2008 Apr 1;146(7):803-12).

The other study found that children diagnosed with ADHD taking the natural herbal supplement Ginkgo biloba “improved significantly overall and in hyperactivity, inattention, and immaturity factors” (Phytother Res. 2010 Jan;23(1):26-27).

Are sunscreens increasing skin cancer rates?

Even suggesting this would have seemed outrageous until just recently, although many of us had noticed that as the use of sunscreens spread rates of skin cancer were going up, not down.

A recent study is now suggesting that a common ingredient in sunscreen could be responsible for higher skin cancer rates. The ingredient is retinyl palmitate, a synthetic form of vitamin A included in most sunscreens as an antioxidant that slows skin aging. However, it now seems that when exposed to sunrays this chemical accelerates the formation of cancerous tumors in the skin.

In addition, other ingredients in sunscreens raise concerns and require more study. One of these is the chemical oxybenzone because it has been shown to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream where even at very low concentrations it disrupts hormone function.

Read about the study here: http://www.aolnews.com/health/article/study-many-sunscreens-may-be-accelerating-cancer/19488158.

Interesting research on breast cancer

A series of studies performed at the Eppley institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases in 2008 shed new light on the possible causes of breast cancer and what can be done to lower the risk of developing this disease.

It is known that estrogen, whether produced in the body or taken as a supplement, is carried through the bloodstream to the liver where it is gradually broken down and eventually eliminated. In this process, the liver releases a variety of estrogen breakdown products, some of which are harmless or even protective of good health, and others that are highly toxic and can cause cancer.

Although genetics also play a part in this, exposure to a variety of chemicals triggers the liver to overproduce toxic forms of estrogen. One of the studies showed that these toxic estrogen breakdown products are found in significantly higher concentrations in women who have breast cancer or who are at high risk of developing it (Int J Cancer, 2008 May 1;122(9):1949-57).

Two other studies show that the antioxidants N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) and Resveratrol (RES) have a balancing effect on liver function, and that this results in an improved ratio of healthy forms of estrogen to cancer-causing ones (J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol, 2008 Mar;109(1-2):22-30, Free Radic Biol Med, 2008 Apr 8).

Both NAC and RES have been shown to increase the liver’s production of glutathione, a protein the liver needs to eliminate toxins from the body. In today’s environment liver stores of glutathione can become depleted leaving us at greater risk for a variety of adverse health events, not just breast cancer. Therefore I feel that NAC or RES (or both) should be a part of everybody’s “survival kit” in this day and age.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy again available at my office

I am happy to announce that I recently added a beautiful new hyperbaric chamber to my practice and that the chamber is now available for anyone wishing to book sessions.

If you are an expert, the chamber is a Vitaeris320 and you can see it and read about it here: http://www.oxyhealth.com/vitaeris-320.html. This chamber is spacious and provides plenty of room for a child and a parent together, or for an adult lying or sitting comfortably. My goal in getting the chamber is to make this form of treatment available at my office, and most importantly to make it available at prices that people can afford.

Nutritional treatments for mental health: a very interesting seminar

I recently attended a seminar at a beautiful location near Lake Tahoe in California. The topic was Micronutrient Treatment and Research in Mental Health. The two main speakers were Bonnie Kaplan, Ph.D., a University of Calgary researcher who has been investigating the effects of nutritional products in mental health, and Boston psychiatrist Charles Popper, MD.

Dr. Popper was described in the seminar materials as a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist with many professional accomplishments in the field of psychopharmacology, or the use of psychiatric drugs, often in combination, to treat mental disorders. This led me to wonder, while I was on my way to the seminar, if half of the seminar would be dedicated to praising modern drugs.

As it turned out Dr. Popper does have a wealth of experience and knowledge of psychiatric medications, but he no longer uses them, or uses them very sparingly and only when absolutely necessary. Instead, for the past decade Dr. Popper has been treating psychiatric patients with nutritional supplements. Those who come to him on medications are rapidly transitioned to nutrients alone, and only for a minority of patients does he prescribe tiny doses of pharmaceuticals.

Beyond colonoscopies

A month doesn’t seem to go by without someone telling me that their doctor recommended that they have a colonoscopy, and asking me if I agree that they should have one. I could never advise against this procedure because there is no doubt that colonoscopies save lives.

On the other hand, the major limitation of colonoscopies is that they can only detect cancer or precancerous changes in the colon. Should there be cancer anywhere else in the body it would be missed.

Aside from colonoscopies, a non-invasive procedure that could provide early detection for cancer anywhere in the body would seem ideal.   Such a procedure exists: a blood and urine test performed by a lab called American Metabolic Laboratories, and you can read about it here: www.caprofile.net. I wrote about the test a few years ago, but I have had many new subscribers since that time and thought I would mention it again.

Vitamin B3 for arthritis, anxiety, behavioral problems, diabetes and maybe even Alzheimer’s

Vitamin B3, one of the B-complex vitamins, attracted little attention until a recent study from the University of California at Irvine found it to reverse Alzheimer’s disease in laboratory mice. Now you can read about this study in just about every natural medicine newsletter and if you Google it you get more than 15,000 hits.

First of all it is important to realize that this study used the “niacinamide” form of vitamin B3. This vitamin, generally referred to as niacin, actually comes in two different forms with significantly different properties. One is niacin, or nicotinic acid, and the other is niacinamide. Niacin is known to cause a flushing sensation when ingested in large doses, and to lower cholesterol.  It has also been used as a component of highly effective detoxification programs involving sauna therapy.

Antioxidants, aging and health

If you’re like me, you are aging and you see some sign of this every day in the mirror: graying hair, wrinkles, sagging skin, new spots on the skin, and so on. Though we rarely think of it, the inside of our bodies undergoes similar changes but with far more serious consequences.

Muscles and organs shrink and function less efficiently until, one day, they begin to fail.  For example, the brain has been shown to lose one-third of its size between ages 35 and 70. Other organs experience similar decline and this makes us more susceptible to illnesses now considered typical of aging, from heart disease to diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and more.

Cells are the basic building blocks of organs, and aging begins at the level of each cell, where structures become damaged and energy production goes on less efficiently. Some cells die without being regenerated and, over time, this is reflected in smaller, less active organs, decreased metabolic rate, and more.

Everything is possible

Whatever challenges we face, or whatever our personal goals, as we enter a new decade it is important to do so with the awareness that our mindset is often our biggest obstacle to success.

Established medicine has a tendency to issue verdicts:  autism is incurable; this individual has six months to live; and so on. While statistically these statements may have some validity, in individual cases they have none because miracles happen all the time.

Throughout my years of practice it has been my observation that “miracles” happen most often among those who believe they are possible, and who are prepared to pay the price. Drastic changes in diet and lifestyle are often needed, and still the outcome is rarely guaranteed.

I am attaching a link to a touching picture story about a mother who did not accept the idea that autism could not be cured, embarked on a mission to change the entire family’s lifestyle, and is now reaping the benefits.  Her way is not the only way, but it is her drive, belief and single-mindedness that are most inspiring about the story.  Here it is:
http://smilebox.com/playBlog/4d5451794d4459324d44553d0d0a&blogview=true

Personal goals are a similar story.  It was believed that no human could run a mile in under 4 minutes until someone did so in the 1960’s, and then a number of athletes who had previously been unable to achieve it did so as well.

Early last year I decided to pursue an old dream of mine to run a marathon, though I had never been a runner. At first I injured myself repeatedly and several people told me that I was too old and this was a bad idea.  Then, I successfully ran the Houston Half Marathon this January and remained injury-free and ready to continue my marathon training. I was feeling proud of myself for achieving this at age 57 until I read the story of Fauja Singh, an Indian man living in England who started to run in his eighties. At 89 Mr. Singh ran his first marathon and at 92 he ran again, shaving more than an hour off his time. Today at 98 he continues to train. Everything is possible!

QRS update

Those who have been receiving this newsletter for some time or are patients of mine are probably familiar with a treatment I recommend called QRS (Quantron Resonance Systems). This treatment is administered through a German-made mat on which people can sit or lie for brief periods of time while it produces pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs).

Although too few Americans are familiar with PEMFs, devices like the QRS are well known in Europe and are often provided in hospitals. In addition, there are volumes of research supporting the benefits of PEMFs for health and some exciting new research discussed in past issues of this newsletter focuses on their benefits for brain function and regeneration, and even severe depression.

To understand the benefits of PEMFs consider that the human body is electric. Nerve signals follow electrical impulses. Healing and regeneration of tissues occurs following electrical signals. Detoxification and absorption of nutrients are driven by electricity, and so forth. Devices like the QRS have the capacity to activate and normalize electrical activity in the body.

If you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, prostate cancer, or a child with autism, don’t miss this interview on YouTube

If you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, prostate cancer, or a child with autism, don’t miss this interview on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzIdpMUunHE

In summary, researchers from the University of Utah and Columbia University recently discovered a new human retrovirus they named XMRV (xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus). This virus was originally discovered in cancerous prostate tissue.

Later it was found that more than 95% of people suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME (CFS/ME) had it, and more recently it has been identified in children with autism although the extent of spread in this population remains to be determined.

Flu shots and respiratory complications from the flu

Parents continue to hear that they should vaccinate their children against the flu, and that they should do so especially if their children have asthma. However, an overlooked detail is that the effectiveness of flu shots in children with asthma has never been proven through research. A newly released study that for the first time evaluates the effectiveness of flu shots in children with asthma reaches very different conclusions. The study analyzed data from the past eight consecutive years and looked at the rate of hospitalization for respiratory complications from the flu among children who were or were not vaccinated and those who had and did not have asthma.

What the study found is nothing short of amazing. Among non-asthmatic children, being vaccinated led to a slightly higher – you read correctly, I didn’t mean lower – rate of hospitalization for complications from the flu. However, among asthmatic children the rate of hospitalization was three times higher for vaccinated children. In other words children were three times more likely to be hospitalized for respiratory complications of the flu if parents followed medical advice and had them vaccinated.

Are you having trouble refilling your Armour Thyroid?

Although I do not prescribe thyroid medication many of my patients take Armour Thyroid, the natural form of thyroid, and I have often recommended that they ask their doctors to switch them to this form of thyroid medication from the more common synthetic forms. Over the years, many people commented that they felt better after switching to Armour from an equivalent dose of synthetic.

A few months ago Armour Thyroid was reformulated and this coincided with people commenting to me that they felt symptoms of low thyroid creeping back although their dose of medication had not changed. To read more about the reformulation go here: http://thyroid.about.com/od/thyroiddrugstreatments/a/armour-reformulation.htm.

Interested in healthy aging? Consider supplementing with Potassium Bicarbonate (K-Bicarb)

Over the years I have written often about how the modern diet and lifestyle cause our bodies to become increasingly acidic as we age, and how excessive acidity leads to or favors many of the health conditions associated with aging.

Although women are reminded constantly about taking calcium to stave off osteoporosis, they have to do extensive research to learn that when the body is acidic it draws calcium and other minerals out of bones, and no amount of milk or calcium supplements will reverse that trend. I wrote about this topic a few years ago and readers who are interested can find my article by going to my website and searching in Newsletters.

Many common symptoms that modern medicine struggles to address today, including fluid retention, fatigue, lack of restful sleep, muscle tension, and more, can result from excessive acidity.

Preventing Swine Flu and the flu in general, and avoiding vaccine side effects

Although to date the H1N1 (or “swine flu”) vaccine has not been released, there is already talk about it becoming mandatory. Concern among parents and others, including people who have not vaccinated before, is that this time they should.

When deciding whether to vaccinate of not, consider that even though swine flu has spread rapidly across the world, most people who had it experienced unusually mild flu symptoms. In rare cases it affects the lungs causing pneumonia, which could become life-threatening.

Though I believe that the risk of these severe complications can be all but eliminated with a few natural precautions, no one can prove definitively that this is so.

Also consider that the swine flu vaccine is not just the usual flu vaccine adapted to a new strain, it is a newly engineered vaccine. Given how quickly it is being developed, it is impossible to rule out the risk of potentially severe side effects that may only become apparent after the vaccine is released in the population.

There is a historic precedent to this. In 1976 the United States was hit by a similar swine flu virus and, just like today, there was a great deal of concern for its possible deadly consequences. Also just as we are seeing now, there was a huge rush to produce a vaccine that, once released, was found to cause an often-fatal neurological disorder called Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS).

A natural alternative to rheumatoid arthritis drugs once labeled as “miracles” that have been found to cause deadly side effects

Yet another recently released family of drugs has been shown to be potentially deadly. This time it is the so-called TNF blockers, a group of drugs that includes Enbrel, Humira, Kineret and others, commonly prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions.

According to information from the FDA, years after being approved as “safe and effective,” these drugs have been proven to cause lymphoma, other types of cancer, and new immune system disorders like psoriasis (although they are also prescribed as treatment for psoriasis).

To understand how this is possible, consider that these medications work by suppressing tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a critical component of the body’s immune response. When there is an immune disorder like rheumatoid arthritis, blocking TNF will reduce inflammation, which means less pain – but at the same time it will make the body more vulnerable to a variety of other illnesses, including cancer.

Not enough people realize this, but it is a fact that rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and other autoimmune disorders respond very well to natural treatments, generally with no side effects, no immune suppression, and therefore no long-term dangers.

My way of dealing with these conditions is based on three primary components: dietary modification, an anti-inflammatory enzyme often described as a “systemic enzyme” called VitalzymX, and a blend of Chinese herbs called BioEssence.

Even though diet is probably not the root cause of these conditions, everyone I have evaluated who came to me with these conditions suffered from undetected food allergies that acted as triggers for their symptoms. These hidden food triggers must be identified and eliminated from the diet in order to initiate and support the healing process. Many times sufferers will report a significant improvement from this step alone.

Systemic enzymes are proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzymes that are taken several times a day between meals. When taken this way they are absorbed in the bloodstream unaltered. They then naturally seek out and break down protein buildup in joints and other inflamed areas of the body. These areas of protein buildup are constantly feeding the inflammatory process and, when cleared, the inflammation also stops or decreases greatly.

While systemic enzymes do not correct the root cause of the condition, they are an essential step (along with diet) to initiate a healing process. They also cause no adverse effects on health and have been shown to actually strengthen immunity and help the body fight off viruses and other infections.

Chinese herbs can do what no drug can: they can normalize immune function, thus enabling sufferers to truly overcome their conditions. In studies, Chinese herbs have often been shown to be equally effective to steroid drugs, like Prednisone, for example in the treatment of asthma. However, one key difference was that the steroids worked by suppressing immunity, whereas the Chinese herbal mixes normalized and strengthened immunity.

The product I am currently recommending is BioEssence. It has proven to be remarkably effective for allergies and asthma, autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, and skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis. However, if you or your child suffers from one of these conditions I strongly recommend that you make an appointment to see me and not try to self-medicate.

Mosquito Update

About two years ago I wrote in my newsletter that I had been finding that taking a capsule or two of vitamin B-1 (thiamine) every day often stopped mosquitos from biting, and a majority of the people who experimented with it said it helped.

Vitamin B-1 is natural, safe, and has other health benefits aside from helping repel mosquitoes. In addition, a bottle containing 100 capsules of vitamin B-1 costs less than $10 at my office. In my opinion, if it works for you it sure beats covering your body with chemicals of questionable safety.

Though it was ineffective for some, in most cases reports have been positive. Yesterday I was reminded of this again when a mother who brings her three children to me said that everyone in her family now takes one capsule of vitamin B-1 a day and mosquitoes are a problem of the past.

For some older children or adults one capsule a day may not be enough, but taking 2 or even 3 is perfectly safe. You may also need to take it an hour or two before you are exposed to mosquitoes for optimal benefits, though many people take it once a day in the morning and find that it protects them for the entire day. If you try this and want to report on its effectiveness please email me at questions@doctorvolpe.com.

Sunscreens and Cancer: Your Options

Now that summer is in full force and the sun is brutal most of the time, especially here in Houston, many of us feel we need to cover our bodies with sunscreen every day before we go out. But is that really such a good idea? And will it really prevent cancer?

I have always found it intriguing that while humans evolved under the sun – not in caves – the sun is increasingly blamed for skyrocketing skin cancer rates. If the sun was truly the culprit, and sun block a major defense, wouldn’t rates of skin cancer be dropping and not rising?

The facts, however, tell a different story. Today skin cancer is more common in the United States than all other forms of cancer combined. Its incidence is also growing faster than all other cancers, increasing by 6-7% each year.

Dealing with the latest flu scare

When it comes to flu scares, I guess you could consider me a skeptic. Basically I continue to see the flu as a mild though annoying seasonal illness that can be effectively prevented, or its impact lessened, with a few simple measures.

Over centuries there have been a small number of more severe flu outbreaks that caused thousands of deaths over short periods of time. While the risk of such an outbreak in our lifetimes is remote, it does exist, as do the risk of being struck by lightning, being run over by a car, or drowning at the beach.

If and when a severe flu outbreak does strike it will be from a suddenly mutated strain of the flu virus and vaccines will be of no use. In fact, there will be little to do aside from the simple preventive measures I am about to discuss below.

Anxious about the economy?

The economy may be slowly on the mend, but one major aspect of hard times like these is the effect they have on mental health. Based on the calls we are receiving at my office, anxiety about the future and personal finances is widespread and people are seeking help.

A news release that recently crossed my desk suggests that up to one in three Americans are losing sleep over the state of the economy. No matter how you look at it, losing sleep will not get you any closer to finding a solution. While the drug companies may be quietly benefiting from this state of affairs, it is important to remember that natural solutions work equally well or better, with no side effects, no risk of addiction, and often with beneficial effects for health in general. Unfortunately, the people who suffer the most are often also the least likely to seek help from a qualified natural health professional like myself because the expense involved generates its own stress and anxiety.
